Selenium is a red or gray powder, a massive quasi metal with a gray metallic luster. Of the six known solid allotropes, three crystals（ α Single Italic β Monoclinic, and gray triangular crystals) are the most important. The gray hexagonal crystal system is the most stable among the crystals, with a density of 4.81 g/cm3. It also exists in three amorphous solid forms: red and black amorphous glass like selenium. The former is brittle with a density of 4.26g/cm3; The latter has a density of 4.28 g/cm3, and the other is colloidal selenium.

Fragile and toxic. Soluble in carbon disulfide, benzene, quinoline.

It can conduct electricity, and its conductivity changes sharply with light intensity. Semiconductor and photosensitive materials can be produced.

The first ionization energy is 9.752 electron volts. Selenium burns in the air and emits a blue flame, producing selenium dioxide (SeO2). It can react directly with hydrogen and halogen, and can directly combine with metals to form selenides. It cannot interact with non oxidizing acids, but it is soluble in concentrated sulfuric acid, nitric acid, and strong bases. Selenium is oxidized to obtain selenium dioxide. Water soluble hydrogen selenide can precipitate many heavy metal ions into particulate selenides. Selenium and metals with an oxidation state of+1 can form two types of selenides, namely, orthoselenides (M2Se) and acid selenides (MHSe). Positive aqueous solutions of alkali metal and alkaline earth metal selenides dissolve elemental selenium to form a polysulfide compound (M2 (Se) n), similar to sulfur that can form polysulfides.
